Corrin is the main protagonist of Fire Emblem Fates. Their name, gender and appearance are customisable by the player. For the purposes of this article, I’ll be looking at male Corrin.
Leading Fire Emblem characters are usually prophesied for greatness, strong willed, and perfectly heroic.
Not our Corrin. He’s lived a sheltered life confined to a fortress. Once Fates gets the conflict rolling, his status quo is shattered. The harshness of reality beckons. He must choose between his adopted or blood-related family, make tough decisions as a leader during war, and discover who he really is a long the way.
Corrin’s trials and tribulations aren’t breaking new narrative ground, but certainly stray from the typical Fire Emblem route of incomparable hero chiseled by flawless genealogy who must overcome evil. Corrin doesn’t always make the right decisions. He’s educated and trained in battle but still way out of his depth in many areas. In-fact his tactics induce a lot of loss over the course of the game.
Corrin also stands out amoung leads of Nintendo games, since he’s one of the few openly bisexual characters in their roster. Your only male romantic option is a character called Niles. Fates‘ predecessor Awakening only had heterosexual pairings so it’s still viewed as a step in the right direction.
The Corrin/Niles romance isn’t played for laughs by the game, it’s thankfully a complete relationship. Their rapport develops earnestly. By the time they become a couple, their bond is extremely genuine.
Corrin goes through a full metamorphosis in Fates. Starts as secluded and unknowing. Then becomes world-adjusted and assertive. During the Revelations route he even outwits the enemy. After witnessing Corrin stumble in the story, I loved this showcase of learned tact.
I’ve only scratched the surface on Corrin. Guess “Deep Dive” is a misleading title in some regards. What I’m trying to articulate is that Corrin’s great because his personal struggles feel relatable. More than any Fire Emblem lead before him.
Fire Emblem Fates‘ ultimate theme is the balance of your decisions. The conviction in your choices. Righting your wrongs. How you change your past, present and future. Corrin’s journey encompasses all of the above. It’s always up to you to decide your own fate.
